National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day

National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day – April 30th, 2016

For the 11th time in 6 years, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) is giving the public the opportunity to prevent pill abuse and theft. Expired, dangerous, unused and unwanted prescription drugs are the target of people looking for drugs. They can be stolen by family members and friends, home staff, caregivers and people coming to an open house. This can lead to misuse, poisonings, overdoses and death.

Throwing them in the trash or flushing them down the toilet is not the answer because both pose potential safety and health hazards.

During National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day, you are asked to bring your pills for disposal.  The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. Click here to find a Take-Back location near you.

2015 Success by the numbers

  • Americans turned in 350 tons (over 702,000 pounds) of prescription drugs
  • At more than 5,000 sites operated by the DEA
  • With more than 3,800 of its state and local law enforcement partners.
  • In the last Take Back events, the DEA and its partners have taken in more than 2,750 tons of pills, eqauling over 5.5 million pounds.

The month of October highlights the need for substance abuse prevention.

Substance Abuse Prevention Month

In 2011, the first-ever Presidential Proclamation designating October as National Substance Abuse Prevention Month was issued by President Obama. Communities, parents, youth, leaders and schools join together across the country for this month-long observance. It highlights the role that substance abuse prevention plays in supporting safe and healthy communities. Click here for more information about National Substance Abuse Prevention Month.
