Learn about Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids refer to the different compounds present in the cannabis plant, also referred to as marijuana. More broadly, it can include any substance that contains Tetrahydrocannabinol or THC. There are both naturally occurring Cannabinoids found in the cannabis plant and a synthetic form replicated in a lab. Some access certain receptors in the brain that cause altered psychological effects.

The psychologically altering Cannabinoids include:

  • Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC)
  • Cannibinol (CBN)
  • Cannibinodiol (CBDL)

Synthetic Cannabinoids can be far more dangerous than their natural counterparts. They are often referred to as “fake weed” or Blaze, Blueberry Haze, Dank, Demon Passion Smoke, Genie, Hawaiian Hybrid, K2, Magma, Ninja, Nitro, Ono Budz, Panama Red Ball, Puff, Sativah Herbal Smoke, Skunk, Spice, Ultra Chronic and Voodoo Spice

What do Cannabinoids look like and how are they taken?

Cannabinoids are derived from cannabis, which is a green, three-leafed plant. It can be consumed orally, sometimes even being baked into desserts such as brownies. It can also be smoked.

Synthetic cannabinoids, or fake weed, come in colors such as red, green, brown and yellow and look like dried leaves. They are sold in small packets, usually a 2×3 foil pack or a plastic zip bag. Fake weed is smoked.

Are Cannabinoids Illegal or Legal?

The cannabis plant and all Cannabinoids are considered illegal in most states; however some states have deemed it legal to use for medicinal purposes. For example, it can help reduce nausea and vomiting for patients going through chemotherapy.

While some synthetic forms are legal (usually not intended for consumption), synthetic Cannabinoids such as K2, or Spice, have in recent years become illegal.

Why are Cannabinoids taken?

Cannabinoids react with the area of the brain that cause feelings of reward. It also reacts with the pain receptor minimizing feelings of pain. People using it usually experience small feelings of euphoria.

Synthetic Cannabinoids were initially used prolifically because they were legal, unlike marijuana which is illegal. They produce a similar “high” to marijuana; however, the high does not last as long. Synthetic Cannabinoids were available to purchase at many stores, and so because of the availability, the substances became widely used especially among young people. Because of the serious and even deadly effects of K2/Spice, however, many have become illegal.

  • Legal bud

Dangers and Side Effects of Cannabinoids

Cannabinoids effect memory and motor skills. Also, any substance that is smoked has negative effects on the lungs.

Synthetic Cannabinoids can be deadly. People who use the synthetic form usually buy into the idea that they are natural because the substances are derived from plants, but they are in fact anything but natural. There are many chemicals with unknown levels of toxicity, and they have not been approved for human consumption. It causes such a concern because the ultimate harmful effects have not been studied enough. For example, there may be harmful heavy metal residue in Spice mixtures, but more information on the chemicals included are not known.

Side effects of synthetic Cannabinoids: These include those reported by K2/Spice abusers taken to Poison Control Centers.

  • Rapid heart rate
  • Vomiting
  • Agitation
  • Confusion
  • Hallucinations
  • Elevated blood pressure

It has also on some occasions been associated with heart attacks. If synthetic Cannabinoids, or fake weed is used regularly, it can cause addiction and symptoms of withdrawal.
