Definition and Description

Buprenorphine is a semi-synthetic opiate used to treat moderate to severe chronic pain. It is less likely to lead to overdose than most other drugs, because the increased effects stop at a moderate dose. This means that it isn’t beneficial to take more than a small dose because there won’t be any heightened feelings beyond a certain point. Also recreational use is generally lower with Buprenorphines because it doesn’t offer the same level of “high” as other opiates. Nonetheless, some drug abuse still does occur.

What does it look like and how is it taken?

Buprenorphine comes in white powder oral tablets. Suboxone, a commonly used drug that contains Buprenorphine, comes in tablet form. It is peach in color with a cross-like symbol on the back and an “N” with a number on the front. It can also come in a liquid injectable form. Abusers of the drug usually crush the powder tablets and snort it.

Illegal or Legal?

Buprenorphine and drugs containing it are legal only when prescribed by a doctor.

The following prescription drugs contain Buprenorphine:

Suboxone, Subutex, Temgesic, Buprenex

Street names for illegal Buprenorphine include:

Subs, subbies, bupe, oranges, sobos, box, and stop signs.

Why are Buprenorphines taken?

Buprenorphine helps relieve chronic pain. A physician may prescribe and administer it as an alternative to heroin or opiates during drug rehabilitation. It can give a feeling of general well-being along with a rush of euphoria and relaxation. It can also have a slight stimulant effect and make people feel outgoing and talkative.

Dangers and side effects

Purchase of any drug including Buprenorphine on the street is dangerous because the purity of the drug is questionable. People should only take it under the strict guidelines provided by a doctor. It is possible to become dependent on Buprenorphine. Withdrawal from the drug can be severe and a doctor should monitor the progress.

  • Side effects of Buprenorphine are similar to that of other opiates and include insomnia, constipation, liver problems, nausea and vomiting.
  • Use of the drug in any individual under 18 can be fatal because it can cause breathing problems in children. When using Buprenorphine with alcohol or other drugs it can lead to fainting, coma, and even death.
