Definition and Description
Cocaine derives from the coca leaves of the coca plant. It is most common in two forms, powder or solid blocks or crystals.
Crack Cocaine is the solid block or crystal form of the drug. The term Crack Cocaine comes from the crackling sound made as a mixture of the “cheaper cocaine” heats up. The user can then smoke it. Crack is a more potent form of cocaine, between 75% and 100% pure. Crack reaches the brain faster, but the “high” lasts for a shorter period of time. It is more addictive than cocaine and carries even higher risks. Crack is more available to teens because of the low price.
On the street, the coca derivative is usually diluted with cornstarch, talcum powder, or sugar. Procaine, amphetamines and other drugs are commonly added. Some users combine heroin and cocaine to create a “speed ball.”
What does it look like and how is it taken?
Cocaine and crack cocaine can come in powder, crystal or brick form. It is mainly snorted, but addicts will also inject it into their system. Crack is normally smoked. Cocaine is more of a snowy white color whereas crack is usually more yellow or rose-colored.
Illegal or Legal?
Cocaine is illegal except when administered by a doctor for medical reasons. Other uses include using it as a local anesthetic, numbing the area for some eye, throat and nose surgeries. Possession of cocaine by any individual other than a medical professional is illegal.

Dangers and side effects
Use of Cocaine is never safe, except when administered by a doctor for medical purposes. Any other use of the drug can lead to absorption of toxic amounts. This causes Cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) or Cerebrovascular (brain) emergencies. Either type of emergency can result in seizures and can cause death. Most deaths related to cocaine use are due to cardiac arrest or seizures followed by respiratory arrest. In rare instances, first time use of cocaine can cause sudden death.
The Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) reported that cocaine factored into 482,188 visits to the ER in 2008 out of the 2 million drug-related ER visits. Meaning that 1 out of 4 admissions to the ER due to drug use involved cocaine.
Side effects of cocaine:
They include dilated pupils, constricted blood vessels, rapid heart rate, and increased blood pressure. Cocaine users may also experience vertigo, nausea, tremors and muscle spasms. The most severe physical side effects include disturbances in heart rhythm, heart attacks, strokes, seizures, and coma. It can also cause psychological effects such as paranoia, panic, irritability and restlessness. Large amounts of cocaine can cause violent, erratic, bizarre and aggressive behavior.
