Drug Testing and the Six Things You Need to Set Up A Program at Work

Drug testing in the workplace takes a bit of planning but here are the six primary things you need to know to set up a successful program at work. In addition, it includes why you need a company drug testing policy and procedures. While we know that drug testing in the workplace comes with challenges for the company administrators and human resources, we also know the benefits far outweigh the challenges.

Work Drug testing:

  • Helps you hire the right, drug-free employees by including pre-employment drug testing as part of your hiring practices.
  • Lets you know if someone coming back to the job from an accident or medical procedure is taking drugs, even those prescribed by a doctor.
  • Can be random, so you can maintain a drug-free workplace.
  • Can save your company money from potential employee accidents and lost time at work.
  • Helps mitigate your company’s liability.

These are only a few of the many reasons why your company should have a drug-testing policy and why your employees should be tested for drugs.

1. Work Drug Testing Policy

This should be in writing and signed by all employees. As a result, it ensures that everyone knows about the program and understands the policy.

2. Work Drug Abuse Education

While the majority of your employees may not use drugs and are committed to a drug-free workplace, it is important to provide drug abuse education and resources. This education can include:

  • Educational information and videos on drugs in the workplace.
  • Inviting a drug specialist or addiction counselor to speak to your employees.
  • A supervisor training opportunity to help managers identify warning signs of drug abuse in their employees.

For example, at each opportunity for drug abuse education, you should go over your drug testing policies and remind workers of the company’s disciplinary policies for drug use.

3. Obtaining Drug Testing Supplies

In order to enforce the policy, you need to have drug testing materials and supplies. With today’s technology, these can be purchased online and done right in the workplace. Similarly, it is important to decide what drugs you want to detect.

4. Implementing an EAP or Employee Assistance Program

An EAP is a confidential service that provides assistance for employees struggling with drug abuse and addiction. For instance, many health insurance programs now bundle EAP programs with traditional health insurance policies. Similarly, many companies find that offering EAP resources for counseling is the most cost-effective means of addressing drug abuse.

5. Initial Set-Up and Partnerships

  • Stealing money or requesting frequent loans
  • Destructive or inappropriate behavior with no regards for social norms
  • Constant excuses or denials about behavior
  • In addition to memory impairment or loss
  • Fighting with employees or managers
  • Above all, carelessness or accidents on the job
